As a stepping stone towards Registered Membership, the psychologist would have initially been a Graduate Member. This means that they would have had to have a minimum qualification of a second class honours degree (or equivalent) recognised by the Council in which psychology is a main subject; or a post-graduate award in psychology recognised by the Council; or such equivalent qualification(s) as the Council may from time to time determine.
Prior to 31st May 2009, once Graduate Membership was attained, the following criteria were further required to attain Registered Membership. At least four years relevant whole time experience; or an equivalent period part-time, in work in psychology, and is professionally competent therein.
Since 1st June 2009, an entrant to the register must be a Graduate Member of the Society, and must hold an accredited postgraduate professional qualification in psychology or equivalent and four years experience inclusive of any time spent undertaking the postgraduate qualification; or a research doctoral degree in psychology in which the thesis was clearly on a psychological topic and both a research supervisor and an examiner were identifiable as psychologists.
