Tic Disorders and behavioural therapy: getting a handle on the basics

Brief description of the event:

The event aims to equip attendees with the skills to assess and treat individuals with tic disorders. The day will encompass a brief of the literature, psychoeducation and behavioural therapy for tics (habit reversal training and exposure with response prevention). The event will include a review of the recent literature and evidence base, videos and practical workshop activities.

Presenter:

Dr Tara Murphy is a consultant clinical psychologist and paediatric neuropsychologist. She has worked with children and adults with tic disorders since 2003. She co-led the National Tic Disorder clinic at Great Ormond Street Hospital until 2017. Tara co-authored the European guidelines for behavioural therapy and also for Assessment in 2011 and for the revised version which are planned for publication in 2020. Tara has co-written two books for families with tics (Tic Disorder: a guide for parents and professionals by Uttom Chowdhury and T Murphy (JKP, 2016; The Tourettes Survival Kit: Tools for Young Adults with Tics by T Murphy and Damon Millar( JKP, 2019). Tara recently co-published book for parents and professionals working with young people which explains the complex neuroscience in this exciting and challenging time ("The Incredible Teenage Brain: Everything you need to unlock your teen's potential" by B Hohnen, J Gilmour and T Murphy; JKP, 2019). Tara worked in Uganda in 2018 and couldn't help but got involved in research with children with tic disorders, which has recently been published. She currently lives and works on the remote island of Saint Helena in the South Atlantic but hopes to return to Ireland in 2021.

For whom?

Psychologists, psychiatrists, occupational therapists, nurses, speech and language therapists and any other professionals working with individuals with tic disorders such as specialist teachers.

It is important that the attendee has experience of delivering therapeutic intervention.
