Diploma in Applied Behaviour Analysis (Autism and Related Conditions)

Location: Dublin & Online

The aim of this course is to give students an understanding of the practical applications of the principles of Applied Behaviour Analysis (ABA) with particular attention paid to persons with autism, intellectual and developmental disabilities, children and adolescents in care, and persons presenting with learning and/or behavioural challenges in school. This intensive course provides training in ABA for complete beginner’s as well as those with some experience who wish to develop their knowledge and understanding of behavioural approaches. Upon completion students will have a greater understanding of the principles of ABA and how to apply them, how to determine the function of a challenging behaviour and how to design behavioural interventions to both decrease and increase behaviour as necessary. A main goal of the course is to give students the tools needed to improve the quality of life of others in a meaningful way. 

 

Diploma in Addiction Studies

Location: Dublin & Online

Start date: Thursday, 27 September

This course gives a comprehensive overview of current thinking and practice in the area of addictive behaviours and substance use/abuse. It focuses on the historical evolution of the various conceptualisations of addiction, the underlying causes attributed to the development and maintenance of addictive behaviours, models for understanding patterns of addiction and the treatments of addiction associated with those models. It further addresses the impact of addictive behaviours on society in terms of health, culture and criminality, paying particular attention to the Irish context.

 

Diploma in Cognitive Behavioural Therapy

Location: Dublin & Online

Start date: Tuesday, 25 September

This course presents student with a sound – and practice-focused – introduction to this modern and evidence-based treatment approach for a variety of psychological problems. CBT seeks to examine and challenge clients with the manner in which their thoughts, beliefs, and attitudes to various events and circumstances negatively affects their mood and behaviour.

 

Diploma in Criminology & Criminal Psychology

Location: Dublin & Online

The purpose of the Diploma in Criminology & Criminal Psychology programme is to equip learners with a basic understanding of the fields of Criminology and Criminal Psychology from a historical, contemporary and progressive perspective.  In addition, fundamental psychological concepts will be considered, including Personality Disorders, Learning Theory and Social Psychology.  

 

Diploma in Mindfulness

Diploma in Counselling Psychology

Location: Dublin & Online

Start date: Thursday, 27 September

The Diploma in Counselling Psychology at City Colleges aims to introduce students to the main theories, strategies, and skills of counselling psychology. Theories covered are derived from the three main basic therapeutic frameworks; humanistic, psychodynamic, and cognitive-behavioural. Students will graduate with a sound basic understanding of these three main schools and specific examples of each from a theoretical perspective. Attention will also be paid to broad differences between counselling psychology and related professions such as counselling, psychotherapy, psychoanalysis, etc. Basic skills training will also be covered. Finally, students will gain experience of research through a project to be completed within one month of completion of lectures.

 

Diploma in Traumatology & PTSD

Location: Dublin & Online

Start date: Monday, 24 September

This course aims to provide students with an understanding of the theory and treatment of trauma and PTSD related symptoms. It presents historical and emerging research and theory related to trauma and PTSD, with a focus on clinical treatment and practical responses to symptoms.  Students will explore a range of theoretical frameworks for understanding trauma, and what factors influence recovery and post-traumatic growth. Complex-PTSD will also be explored and the emerging literature around this concept will be explored. Therapeutic interventions will be discussed using empirical research and evidence-based practice. A practical clinically-focused account of cases and clinical experience of working with severely traumatised individuals will also form part of the programme. This course is suitable for; social workers, psychotherapists, psychologists, psychiatrists, GPs, nurses, Gardai, emergency responders, teachers, and anyone whose job brings them into contact with individuals dealing with trauma and PTSD. For existing practitioners, this programme will provide a basis for developing skills used in responding to traumatic presentations.
