The PSI is delighted to present a free half-day workshop from 2pm-5pm for PSI members on Thursday 08 October 2020. Presented by Dr Odhrán McCarthy, this free event will take place via Zoom.
Odhrán's talk “Social Anxiety: Reflections on what hinders and helps” aims to combine the learning and insight from his PhD literature review with his twenty years of running group intervention (largely based on CBT principles) to facilitate a discussion on factors that facilitate and impede therapeutic gains when working with individuals with social anxiety. It will hopefully be of interest to clinicians whose caseload includes individuals with social anxiety.
Odhrán Mc Carthy is a Principal Clinical Psychologist (Specialist) who studied in the University of Massachusetts, University College Dublin, and more recently obtained a PhD from Trinity College Dublin. One of Odhrán’s primary research interests is in what help and hinders therapeutic progress in group intervention settings and one of the focus of his PhD was an “…exploration of the moderators and mediators that influence treatment outcomes”.
Odhrán has worked within the Irish health service for the last 28 years and is currently positioned with the HSE adult mental health services of Dublin North County. Odhrán is a frequent clinical supervisor, occasional lecturer (adjunct associated professor (TCD) and adjunct professor (UCD)) and is on the course advisory committee on TCD Diploma and Masters in Cognitive Therapy programmes. Odhrán developed a special interest in social anxiety early in his career and initiated his first social anxiety treatment group in 1999, and the programme has grown and developed steadily ever since. Odhrán’s other particular interests include EUPD and chronic pain. In 2014, Odhrán established Social Anxiety Ireland (SAI) as an independent non-profit company and by 2016 had SAI registered with the Charity Regulatory Authority. He currently acts as chairperson for the SAI board. Odhrán has also co-published a number of peer-reviewed research papers and academic book chapters in the area of social anxiety. Odhrán is also a recent ordinary member of the PSI Council.
